This tournament can be summed up with “self-reliance and teamwork.” Everyone stepped up to the plate and was ready to play their best. Even though we didn’t make it to finals, we finished playing our best and that’s the greatest feeling.
The day started out with six players: Sonja, Virginia, Wendy, Ashley, Emily and me. In the first match of pool play, we took both sets. Wendy was playing awesome and revved up our competitive spirit. In the second match, Michelle Dorsch arrived as our libero, substituting for Virginia and me to exhibit her extraordinary defense skills…being able to play any defensive position at any time. And that she did. Every game we had her play left back, middle back and right back, and it was so smooth.
The second match started with us ahead. During one rally, Virginia made a mid-flight decision that her head was the closest object to the ball and head butted it over the net. Her soccer skills were shining through. Emily and I giggled all the way through that rally. The second set of the match was a nail-biter. We were down 13-20 but we rallied and won 26-24 after a couple of key plays went our way.
If there was an MVP this tournament, it was Emily. No set was un-killable. No block too big. No defense she could not penetrate. She was the go-to hitter to terminate the play. That’s not to take any credit away from Virginia. Virginia was a beast at the net. She loved pounding the “wood” (no sand here) on the other side of the net.
Back to pool play: We lost both sets of the third match of pool play. Boo hoo. Moving on. In the fourth match, we played against the East Coast Girls, headed up by Ashley’s future collegiate coach, Jayme. We battled it out for both sets and finished pool play 6-2 for an overall second place finish.
The semi-finals were against the other pool’s number-one team, La-Jit. You know, “too la-jit to quit.” We were ready. We had our warrior paint on and were ready to battle it out. It was intense. For us older players, endorphin was our fuel…oh and a little Tiger Balm and Excedrin. The play was awesome. There were some unbelievable plays like the time Sonja was on the ground and made a desperate reach for the ball to send it over the net, and it happened! Each set ended with us a couple of points short, but we played our best. It was a day that everyone and everything clicked. Emily summed it up by saying that’s the best volleyball game she’s played in a year. 2009 is looking good. Can’t wait to get on the court again!
And did I mention the fans? They were awesome. We had Prudence, Sonja’s mom, who always comes to tournaments with lots of chocolate. (We play well on chocolate.) She also brought lots of dark chocolate so Wendy and I didn’t have to fight over it. Then there were the hubbies and hubbies-to-be: Brad, Virginia’s husband (along five-month-old son Simon), Warren, Sonja’s husband, and Adam, Emily’s soon-to-be husband. Then there was my dad and Emily’s parents. Emily’s mom is such the Team Mom. She is always looking after us, making sure we have plenty of water and tracking down lost balls. I was sitting on the bench a couple of times so I got to listen to the fans. I would have to say our oldest fan, Prudence, is the most fanatic fan. She is hilarious! You don’t want to lose or she is going to lose it! I love it. We also had some showing from Jeff and Craig. Thanks for watching! The fans were awesome and cheering us on loudly.
Fans, thanks for all the support and rallying us though. Hope to see you at the next tournament. We hope to give you a good show!
